Most of the time people have a hard time distinguishing between toupees and wigs when in fact
they are actually two different types of hair pieces. Sometimes toupees are called also called half wigs which in actual fact are quite an
accurate description. The main difference between a wig and a toupee is the size of the covered area. Wigs are almost always used to cover
baldness over the whole scalp why toupees are used to cover part of the scalps which are bald.
The use of toupees are much more prominent than the use of whole wigs as people rarely have
complete baldness to cover up. Toupees are more commonly referred to as hairpieces or units. Although wigs and toupees are generally associated
with male use, females who suffer from hair loss are much more likely to use toupees to cover up their balding areas.
The make of toupees are very similar to wigs but smaller. Toupees are very rarely mass produced
and are almost always custom made to suit the wearer. As with wigs users have a choice of either synthetic fibers as their toupees hair
replacement or human hair. As most toupees are smaller than wigs the cost is also less. It is thus the case that most people that use toupees can
afford to go for a better quality item.
The main idea of a toupee is to cover-up bald spots that the wearer might have, it is thus
vital that the toupee must work well together with the users remaining hair in order to provide proper coverage necessary for a well developed
hairpiece. As with wigs, toupees need constant care and attention in order for them to look the best. There is nothing worst than a toupee that
has been poorly looked after which can easily be identified as a hair piece because of its fading color or poor match with the users existing
hair.
Most of the time makers or toupees will advertise their products with men partaking in rigorous sports such as swimming or, water skiing or other
extreme sports to indicate that the toupee and its fastening is strong enough to handle the beating that these sports provide to hair pieces.
Even if a toupee can stand up to these rigors once or twice, over a short time even the best toupees will deteriorate. Exposure to the sun, sea
water, chlorine and any other natural elements will surely kill toupee. Even shampoos and cleaning fluids just to keep the toupee hygienic will
cause the toupee to deteriorate.
An important rule to remember is that if you have a quality toupee to begin with then chances
are that the quality will make care for the it easier along the life of the toupee. Even the best cared for toupee with need to be replaced after
some time. For the best results toupees should always be changed when hairline changes or when the hair color changes with age and if the
condition of the toupee is not up to standard any longer. It is recommended that a user should not only have one toupee but have at least three
so that swapping and maintenance can be more easily carried out.
