Tips
for Recovering Hair After Radiation
As mentioned
earlier, there really isn’t much you can do about hair loss if you
are undergoing any sort of therapy that involves radiation. The
best way to deal with it is to accept it and hope that it is all
for a better future. There are however ways in which you can help
to minimize your hair loss and also keep as much of your hair as
possible.
The first and
most important thing to remember is that you must keep your hair
and its associated roots and follicles away from as much stress as
possible. The first thing you can do is to change your shampoo to a
baby shampoo that is good and mild. You should avoid combing your
hair but instead use a wide angle brush so you don’t accidentally
pull any hairs off unnecessarily. You should use a soft and fine
weave cover for your pillow so your hair can glide on it when you
sleep. You should use sun protection cream on your scalp if you are
going to be exposed to the sun for long periods of time. You should
avoid using hair dryers. You should also avoid any chemical
enhancements or beauty products on your like dyes etc. Lastly you
should cut your hair to a shorter style so gravity doesn’t exert as
much force on your hair.
When and if
baldness starts to set in then it might be time to have to total
clean shave or start wearing a hair piece. To those who have never
even considered wearing a wig before the idea of putting something
on your head and act natural about it might be quite strange but
trust me in saying that after a while you’ll feel rather naked
without it. The trick to get your hair to the right short style
before you actually need a wig. That way you can ask your hair
stylist to make the wig follow the exact same style that you had
previously so people won’t get a shock and start questioning you
about the wig. Sometimes shopping for a wig can be quite a strange
experience so there are actually specially set-up services that can
come to your doorstep with the wigs so you can make your selection
in private. Lastly you must make sure that your wig is comfortable
for you and doesn’t irritate your scalp so you can keep with it for
the long haul waiting for your new hair to grow back.
When your own
natural hair grows out it is very important that you care for it
well so that it grows back to its original luster. You may notice
that the first hairs that grow out may not be the exact same color
or thickness as your old hair but understand that in time when your
follicles have fully recovered your hair will return to its
original thickness and color. There are some important pointers
that I’d like to impart so you can care for you new grown hair so
it will grow back to the past glory. Firstly, try not to get
yourself too dirty and limit your hair washes to twice a week only.
Again, only use baby shampoo that is very mild. You should brush
your hair with a rounded tip brush so as to massage your scalp into
rejuvenating. It is also very important to no use too much gel or
even consider dying your hair at this crucial moment. Let it grow
out until it is back to its normal color and thickness then do
whatever you wish.
I believe if you
follow these simple tips that you will be able to minimize the
impact of the hair loss initially and get your full body of hair
back after radiation as fast as possible.
