Looking into history, wigs are some of the oldest methods to cover up hair loss. If you look
back to history many world leaders at their time used wigs to cover up hair loss. Dignitaries from even before the birth of many civilizations
have been proven to through historical records to have used hair pieces that are very similar to the ones that we have today. It was even the
case in the Victorian era that even people without hair loss problems use wigs simply as a way to convey authority and status. This has even been
brought forward today with legacy customers like barristers in UK which are forced to use wigs when they attend a court session.
The main differences between wigs of the olden days and wigs now is their size, style and the
way in which it is attached to the head. The traditional way to attach a wig to the head is to use a form of tape or glue. This is the most
straight forward way to do it however is also the most dangerous as it can come off very easily especially if the glue or tape start to dissolve
with sweat. The last thing a wig wearer wants is to have a wig accidentally fall off or even move slightly causing a hairstyle that is less than
flattering. The public embarrassment and humiliation caused by a wig that didn’t hold in place can be quite hard to swallow.
Instead of relying solely on glue and tape new forms of attachment devices and types have been
developed. Some wigs have an elastic band around the base of the wig which can wrap around the head of the wearer quite securely. Others have
relied on hidden fastening clips that are clipped on to the ear and fastened there.
Another more drastic measure is to surgically implant some wire loops into the head so the wig
can be securely fastened or tied down to the head. This is drastic and although the wig almost never falls off it can cause serious infections,
hygiene problems and even terrible smells if not looked after properly. This is because you are introducing a foreign matter to your scalp which
the body will continually try to get rid off causing the problems.
Another less invasive and more sensible method is to use “tunnel grafting” meaning another
piece of skin is grafted on the scalp which forms a loop which can be used to tie down the wig. The skin is normally taken from just behind the
ear lobe and is surgically grafted on the scalp to form a living look of skin that can accept plastic fasteners to secure the wig. This is the
preferred way make a permanent fastener system for wigs.
Wigs are extremely diverse in their types and appearances and are generally custom made to the
wearer’s head. Some cheaper off-the-shelf types are mass produces and can almost instantly be identified as a hair piece by even the most blur of
people. Generally the more lifelike and real the wig looks when compared to the wearer’s original hairstyle the more expensive it is. Some of the
most expensive types of wigs are extremely hard to differentiate between real and fake and serve the wearer well by keeping up their look to
standard.
The characteristics of a good wig are in its color durability, its durability in terms of
keeping the right hair density and also its correct sheen when compared to the wearer’s original hair color. Most synthetic wigs have a very hard
time keeping their color especially if they are exposed to the sun and the elements through daily use. One way to keep the standard appearance is
to replace the wig frequently which can be a very expensive proposition.
When it comes down to it, if you want a wig to look 100% you will have to spend quite a lot on
the expenses of upkeep and replacement. If however you want to cut corners then you will have a wig that looks substandard and is very easy to
tell from the real thing. It is very important to understand that wigs aren’t a very easy maintain and to look 100% correct. In order to do so it
is quite expensive.
