These products as indicated by its name is used to thicken hair that is thinning and beginning
to make your scalp look sparse and unsightly. The thing is that many products are actually clumped together under the heading hair thickeners and
we will try to explore the different types that the market has produced to help people with hair loss problems. We will list the cheapest options
to the most expensive options.
The first type of product that is commonly marketed as a hair thickener is nothing more than
normal hair conditioner that is packaged differently. If you have used hair conditioner before you will feel that your hair is slightly
“plumped-up” after a treatment. It is this affect that many manufacturers use to market their conditioner based hair thickeners. Some other
conditioner based hair thickeners have a slightly different formulation which increases the amount of silicon available in the conditioner. The
silicon will bind with the hair and cause it to be even thicker by coating the hair with a layer of thin silicon to buff it up. There are also
some manufacturers who introduce thickened conditioner as hair thickeners. Initially the results will be good but prolonged use isn’t recommended
as it does not let hair breathe and makes it harder of the scalp to breathe too. This is normally the cheapest option available and the
conditioner based thickeners are available in almost all pharmacies and departmental stores.
Another type of hair thickener which is available on the market are lacquer mixtures which are
put into spray cans. Basically what it does is to cover the scalp with “paint” that is the same color as your hair thus hiding the bald spots.
Technically this isn’t really a hair thickener as it doesn’t have anything to do with the hair, rather it’s just a cover but somehow it is
marketed as a hair thickener because of its similar affects. Think of this option as coverage and camouflage rather than actually doing anything
to your hair. It should be said that the formulation for these sprays are very different to you average water based of oil based paints and using
the normal sprays on your head is a very bad idea. These sprays are easy to wash off and thus have a price that is higher than you would normally
expect from a tin of spray. They cost slightly more than the conditioner based thickeners mentioned earlier not because of the cost of the spray
tin but because of the amount you have to use per session. The spray tins generally don’t last very long and you will have to use quite a few
cans a month if you spray after every wash.
The last product is basically a derivative of the spray on option as mentioned above. The only
difference is that the lacquer is mixed in with very fine powder which has an ability to cling on to hair and to make hair look substantially
thicker than what it normally looks like. The thing is that the more is sprayed the thicker your hair will look especially if you use it in
different coats. As one coat dries on the hair another will form over it giving the hair an even thicker look. Using this technique you can make
you hair look 3 times as thick than what it looks like normally. As with the other spray products this one will also wash off with water and you
will need to apply it every time after wash which can be quite expensive if you use it all the time.
Hair thickeners are not effective against all types of hair loss. It doesn’t suit people who
suffer from male pattern baldness of female pattern baldness but are much better for people who suffer from alopecia areata meaning that they are
experiencing hair loss evenly all over their scalps and first exhibit signs of initial hair loss by a thinning of hair evenly all over the scalp.
This type of treatment is also appropriate for people who have just had hair transplant surgery and are slowly seeing their hair returning. You
can use the hair thickeners to cover the affected areas so that styling will be much easier.
The problem is that this type of treatment is only suitable in addressing the symptoms of hair
loss and can’t do anything to help or reverse it. The affects are very dramatic and can be very convincing. If you are looking to use these
products understand that it is much like a stop-gap measure and shouldn’t be considered a permanent treatment option.
