Although most people view baldness with a negative trait it is believed that baldness is more
than just a sign of aging and actually has it roots in the development of human societies. It should be noted that male-pattern-baldness does not
only happen to human males but is also observed to happen in primate species. The pattern of baldness of all the primates is very similar to
baldness in humans characterized by the enlargement of the forehead due to receding hair line and a thinning of hair especially on the top of the
scalp.
It has been widely speculated that baldness is a method to convey both the increase in status
and maturity of a human male in times where society has not developed to such a degree as it has today. Even in recent history eunuchs of the
Chinese empire have intentionally shaved the frontal portion of their scalps to simulate the affects of balding simply to convey an image of
authority. The fact is re-enforced by women with the same heritage and lineage as their male counterparts never show the same balding patterns
but show an overall reduction in hair thickness in a uniform pattern all over the scalp.
Interestingly, there was a study done by Muscarella & Cunnhingham that concluded that
baldness was indeed a form of anatomically registering the age and thus social ranking of males in the human species along with some other
primate species. The report suggested that the occurance of baldness is to aid sexual selection for females. The study has suggested that in
addition to conveying a male with advanced age and social status hair loss in males also suggests a reduction in aggression, a decrease in
risk-taking behavior along with an increase in nurturing behavior. In non-human societies this trait would indicate a steadier partner and thus
would most probably have a greater chance of fathering off-spring successfully.
In a separate research paper on balding men’s perceptions of what women think of their balding
scalp is widely different than the actual feelings of women towards them. Men normally think very negatively about their self image due to their
baldness however women of almost all ages do not have many negative feelings about it. 30% of the women sampled even admitted that they find
balding men sexier than men with a full head of hair. 40% of the sampled women commented that men that are at terms with their baldness and
aren’t emotionally hindered by it are rated sexier than men who don’t have a balding problem.
It has normally been the mistake of many men to think that hair loss is only associated with
aging and all its other negative aspects. In retrospect it is even engineered into our human male bodies to bald just to help us along with our
social status and even help us in being more sexually attractive to the other sex. If you look purely at a biological stand-point then balding
men are actually more attractive as they are perceived as better mates with a higher degree of responsibility and thus a much better suitor
compared to less mature males. Socially and culturally there should not be any difference. The number of sexy bald men in Hollywood should
testify to the fact.
