Hair Loss and what you can do to take control of the situation

Sometimes during pregnancy or after childbirth women will experience hair loss, some will have a very bad while some can keep it under control by keeping their hair short and taking some extra supplements to keep their hormones in check.

It is very common for hair loss anywhere from 3 months to 6 months after birth. Firstly although you might be shedding more hair than normal there isn’t any need to panic, this is very normal. It is extremely unlikely that you will shed enough hair to cause a visually noticeable difference in the appearance of your hair.

Most of the time what actually happens is during pregnancy the mother’s body is flushed with the hormone estrogen. High levels of estrogen are necessary for the proper development of the baby but have the side effect of messing up the hair follicle growth patterns. What happens is that the hair is almost always growing during the last few half of pregnancy. This causes the mother’s hair to be much more luxuriant with thicker than normal hair. The problem is that when the levels of estrogen drop back to normal after the pregnancy hair follicles which were previously so active start their resting stage which often means that the hair will fall out. It should be noted that only 15% of all your scalp hair will be resting at any one time so even if your hair is falling out, it is extremely unlikely that all will fall-out. The shedding will eventually taper off and your hair will grow back to your pre-pregnancy levels eventually.

Unfortunately there really isn’t much you can do about the hair loss as it is quite a natural thing. It is worthwhile to point out that the hair loss can also reduced if you choose a hair style that is less taxing on the roots such as a much shorter cut to help with the hair loss. The shorter cut will be useful since you will not have as much time on your hands to mess around with your hair since you have a new born baby in your house.

Sometimes hair loss after pregnancy can also be caused by changes in women’s thyroid functions after birth. An overactive or under active thyroid can cause hair loss. Sometimes women may already have this thyroid condition but aren’t aware of it until pregnancy which encourages symptoms of it. Some women who already have this condition might have the condition worsened or even improved after pregnancy where the balance of medication has to be re-adjusted in order to reduce hair loss.

Most of the time hair loss will start to plateau off and you will enjoy normal hair thickness as when you were before the pregnancy. The normal hair condition will normally return a year after child birth at most. If you are still experiencing high levels of shedding for a few (5-6 months) straight then it is more worrisome. Sometimes normal hormone levels are not restored and a visit to the local doctor will be necessary to get the hormone levels re-balanced.

Childbirth is a very exciting time for both parents and should not be tainted with the worry of hair loss. Rest in the knowledge that 99% of the mothers have certain levels of hair loss and will eventually regain their hair.
